Homemade Chicken Kottu Recipe (Koththu):  The King of Sri Lankan Street Food🍗❤️‍🔥

Healthy and delicious chicken kottu at home by Yummy Bites SL.

📝Introduction

In Sri Lanka, when we think of dinner, the first thing that comes to mind is kottu. There is hardly anyone who doesn't get hungry at the sound of the "taka taka" coming from the kottu pan in the evening. If you close your eyes and think of Sri Lankan Street food, you don’t just smell the spices—you hear the taka-taka-taka of the metal blades hitting the griddle. Kottu is the heartbeat of our street food.

Kottu is one of those foods that instantly brings back memories. For me, it’s the sound first — that rhythmic chopping on the hot pan that fills the street when Kottu is being made. At home, I don’t have the loud metal blades, but even the gentle clatter of my spatula on the pan makes me smile. It always feels like I’m bringing a little bit of that street-food magic into my own kitchen.

Homemade Kottu is comforting, filling, and surprisingly easy to make. You can control the spice, the oil, and the ingredients, which makes it even better than eating out. I make this on days when I have leftover chicken curry. This is the method I easily make at home. Today we will see how to make a healthy and delicious chicken kottu at home. Now you don't have to rush around the shops all night to eat kottu at night! Today I'll teach you the secrets to making a super chicken kottu at home in just a few minutes.

👍Recipe Overview

  • Dish Type: Main meal
  • Cuisine: Sri Lankan
  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Servings: 2–3 people
  • Difficulty: Medium

🧺Ingredients

  • 5-6 Godamba Rotis / Paratha
  • 1 cup chicken curry with gravy
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 2 green chilies (chopped)
  • 1 cup carrot (thinly sliced)
  • ½ cup cabbage (shredded)
  • 1 cup leeks (chopped)
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Chili flakes
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

🔪Required Equipment

  • Large frying pan
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Knife
  • Chopping board

👩‍🍳Recipe Steps

1. Prepare
First, roll the rotis slices from the store on top of each other and cut them into very thin pieces with a knife.
- If you don't have godamba rotis, you can also use paratha for this.

Remove the bones from the chicken pieces and break them into small pieces with your hands.
- If you don't have chicken curry, you can also cut raw chicken into small pieces, add salt and chili powder, and fry in oil.

2. Tempering
After the oil is hot, put a pan on the stove and add the curry leaves, onion, green chilies and ginger-garlic paste and fry until golden brown.

3. Add the vegetables and eggs
Now add the chopped carrots, leeks and cabbage and cook for about 2 minutes. Then set the vegetables aside and crack the two eggs in the middle, add a little salt and pepper and mix well.

4. Add the chicken and bread slices
When the eggs are cooked, add the chopped chicken and bread slices. Add the chili flakes and mix everything well.

5. Add the chicken gravy
Now pour the reserved cup of chicken gravy into this little by little. Stir well with a spoon. The gravy will soften the bread pieces and absorb the flavor well.

Now your homemade kottu is ready! Enjoy it hot.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

- The Extra Gravy: When eating Koththu, be sure to serve a cup of hot Chicken Gravy on the side. It is a must-have for Wet Koththu.

- Spicy Kick: For those who like spicy food, add a spoonful of our Yummy Bites SL Chili Paste and a slice of lemon.

- Night-Out Vibe: Add a glass of chilled fruit juice or soft drink to the dining table and celebrate a "Koththu Night" with friends and family.

♻️Leftover Tips

- Storage: It is best to eat koththu as soon as it is made. Since it contains eggs and vegetables, do not keep it at room temperature for too long. If there is any leftover, immediately put it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge.

- Reheating Trick: When reheating koththu, if you just heat it, it will dry out. So, put it in a pan and while heating it, sprinkle 2-3 spoons of chicken broth or a few drops of water on top and heat it with the lid closed. It will be soft again.

- Koththu Omelet: If you have some leftover koththu, beat an egg well and mix this koththu with it and fry it like an omelet in a pan. You can easily make a very tasty "Koththu Omelet" for breakfast.

🔄Variations

- Cheese kottu: Add grated cheese at the end.

- Vegetable kottu: Skip the meat and add more veggies.

- Egg kottu: Use only eggs and vegetables.

- Spicy kottu: Add extra chili or chili paste.

⚠️Common Mistakes

- Using roti that is too fresh and soft

- Adding too much oil

- Overcooking the vegetables

- Not seasoning enough

💡Tips from My Kitchen

- Slightly dry roti works best for kottu.

- Cut everything into small pieces for even mixing.

- Taste as you go and adjust spice and salt.

- Adding a little butter at the end will make it taste even better.

The taste of a kottu is determined by the chicken gravy. So when making the chicken gravy, make it thick and spicy.

- Don't let the rotis be too big. Cut the rotis thinly (that's when all the gravy will be absorbed well into the paratha pieces).

- Don't let the vegetables (cabbage, carrots, leeks) boil too much, they should have a "Crunchy" texture.

✅Troubleshooting

  • Too dry: Add a splash of water or gravy.

  • Too oily: Add more roti or vegetables.

  • Not flavorful enough: Add a little more curry powder or salt.

🌾Conclusion

There’s something about a plate of homemade Kottu that just feels like a hug.  It’s not just food — it’s a mix of sounds, smells, and memories. It’s the perfect way to use up leftovers, and honestly, it usually tastes better than the ones you buy outside because you can load it with as much meat and cheese as your heart desires.

Homemade kottu has a special kind of warmth. Making it in your own kitchen lets you enjoy all that comfort without rushing or standing in a long line. Every pan of kottu feels a little different, but that’s what makes it perfect.

You can also make the wheat rotis needed for this at home. Comment if you need to know how to make them.
